Dallin in our Memory & His Sherborn Sculptures Zoom Recording
What do you know about the “Memory” statue? It is so familiar to those of us who drive by its location in the Town of Sherborn’s Central Burying Ground at the split of Routes 16 and 27. The statue memorializes the Sherborn residents who died in wars through World War I, was a gift of William Bradford Homer Dowse and was created by the sculptor Cyrus Dallin (1861-1944). The Town also received, as a gift from Dr. Scudder, a plaster copy of Dallin’s bust of Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
Geri Tremblay and Nancy Blanton, who are respectively the President and Secretary/Staff Director of Outreach and Engagement of the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum in Arlington, Massachusetts, gave a presentation entitled “Dallin in our Memory and his Sherborn Sculptures” on Saturday, September 13. They consider the “Memory” statue to be one of Dallin’s more significant works. Another copy of the bust of Dr. Holmes is on display at the museum.
